For the past few weeks I’ve been spending a lot of time with BUILD, a non-profit organization based in California which recently started operating in Washington D.C. BUILD’s mission is to use the real world experience of starting and running businesses to propel students from under-resourced communities to excel in education, lead in their communities and succeed professionally. These 9th and 10th graders from the Maya Angelou Schools and Dunbar High School have more heart and enthusiasm in their little fingers…well, you know.
Working with their mentor volunteers and school teachers, the BUILD kids develop a business plan, obtain seed capital from venture capitalists, create and then sell their product all while competing with the other schools. We’re talking T-shirts, dog-grooming services, eco-friendly tourist bags…creative and often successful ventures. It was the first “real” client that I’ve worked with, and soon some of my images will be featured on their website – BUILD.ORG
